How did the name Dissonance Dance Theatre come about?
Dissonance, meaning discord, was how Artistic Director and Founder Shawn Short felt upon entering the Washington, DC dance scene in 2005. He believed the dance company styles and missions in the D.C. area did not match his vision for dance, so he decided to break away and create something fresh.
Why is Dissonance Dance Theatre important in the Washington, DC Area?
Our mission at Dissonance Dance Theatre is to challenge the audience's assumptions about the human experience through dance. The arts can change a nation and a community. In addition, DDT puts the audience member first when creating work, constantly redefining and polishing for the audience member's enjoyment.
