Dear Fellow Dance Lovers,
I present to you the initial beginnings of the dance documentary, Dancing in the Dark; The Unspoken History of
Black Concert Dance in Washington, DC (DID)
This
project is a co-production between JDB Digital Productions and
Dissonance Dance Theatre (DDT), who both
felt the immediate need to preserve the District's rich cultural history by archiving
African-American Concert Dance history in Washington, DC.
Dancing
in the Dark; The Unspoken History of Black Concert Dance in Washington, DC (DID) is the first
dance documentary under Dissonance Dance Theatre's (DDT) pilot program, DDT Film
Works, an interdisciplinary collaborative project intersecting dance and video
with emerging and established local filmmakers. DDT originated as a project in
2005, and then evolved into a company in 2007. Our mission at Dissonance Dance
Theatre is to challenge the audience's assumptions about the human experience
through dance. Our vision at DDT is our long-standing commitment to shift
audience's paradigms by exploring movement with the intention of enriching
people's lives locally and nationally.
This
documentary film project has an estimated completion time of two years, with the
goal of improving the vibrant cultural history of black concert dance in
our nation's capital. The advantages of
a video documentary archiving African Americans in dance is that it provides
opportunities for seasoned artists of color to be honored and acknowledged for
their great artistic contributions. In addition, emerging artists of color will
learn of our elder's contributions to the development and sustainability of the
legacy and for us to continue to preserve our culture on the global front.
